If you’re like most people, you probably consider oatmeal to be just a breakfast food. Those tasty oats make a wonderful comfort food on a cold, early morning. However, we have some bad news for you. If you’re only eating oatmeal for breakfast…you’re doing it wrong.
The truth is, oats can be used in a variety of dishes from hearty dinner courses to delectable desserts. Even better, they can be used as a gluten-free substitute to flour allowing you to make healthier, less guilt-inducing treats.
Rolled Oats & Oat Flour For Oatmeal Recipes
Before we get started, there’s a couple ways that you can utilize oats in your recipes. The most common (and obvious) option is adding them to existing recipes for their flavor and texture profiles. However, you can also use them to substitute ingredients to make healthier alternatives. Rolled oats can be used to substitute up to 50% of the flour in baking. To do so, add an additional 1 teaspoon of baking powder for every 1 cup of rolled oats used in your recipe.
You can take it a step further by grinding the oats in a coffee grinder or food processor to create “oat flour.” Do so until you have a semi-fine powder and use this powder to substitute for flour entirely. By using Modern Oats’ gluten-free oatmeal for this process, you’ll be able to create a gluten-free flour substitute that can be swapped into countless recipes. For those on the gluten-free diet, or suffering from celiac disease, this is a game changer.
Adding 2 teaspoons of baking powder to every 1 cup of oat flour (slightly more baking powder than you would use for un-powdered oats) can help counteract any crumbling issues that may occur. Be sure that you’re using a baking powder that doesn’t have any wheat starch added to it (most do not but be sure to check) as wheat starch contains gluten. Due to the fact that oats are a very dry product, it is advised to add a small amount of oil or extra rising ingredients to your recipe to prevent it from over-drying and crumbling. As with anything, some experimentation will help you dial in your recipe to perfection.
Due to the sweeter flavor profile of oat flour compared to wheat flour, you can also get away with using less added sugar in your recipes. You heard that right, not only will your food be gluten-free, but it will contain LESS added sugar!
Okay, that’s enough science for the day. Pat yourselves on the back. Maybe some of you consider the subject of oat flour to be fascinating, but many of you likely came here because you want delicious and healthy food, so let’s get to it.
